This is my second book with the amazing illustrator David Litchfield, published by Templar. It starts from the sad truth that, whether we are a child or an adult, when we feel bad about ourselves, and are really in need of friendship, that’s often when we are most grumpy and drive people away. However, the story ends happily with a celebration of the power of Creativity and Imagination and Play, and David’s illustrations are wonderful. What we need when we feel like the Troll, is not judgement, but the support and patience of kind people, and that’s why I, as the writer, dedicate the book: ‘To all who listen very carefully, and watch, and wonder, and to Graeme, who is so kind. ‘ Graeme is my husband. My dedication is to thank him for being so lovely to me during times when I have felt low or depressed and like staying in my cave. I love how, like the boy in the story, he tempts me out with fun things to do, and specifically encourages me to write stories and to do Art, which always makes me feel more human!

The good thing is that we all have the capacity to be at times, both the grumpy troll or the kind, empathetic child who helps others, and so we need to remember not to judge people when they are not at their best, (and that includes ourselves) or to think that’s all they (or we) can ever be. We all need to have the chance to be creative, and to play and have fun with our friends, and if we have that chance, that will always bring out the best in us. I think this applies to both children and adults, and I hope that the story helps and delights anyone of any age who reads it!
